Homemade Cleaners

Homemade Laundry Detergent
I did not notice any difference in the quality between this recipe of homemade laundry detergent and expensive store bought laundry detergents, and found this recipe works just as well for my front loading machine as it does a top loading machine.

Simmer together. ( can take a while to dissolve soap)

1/4 - 1/3 bar soap, shaved (Fels Naptha)
1 cup Hot Water

When soap is dissolved, take off heat & whisk in....

4 TBLS Washing Soda (Not Baking soda, Can be hard to find)
2 TBLS Borax

In a large container (about a gallon) pour in....

12 cups cold water
20 drops essential oil of lavender

Then add the hot soap mixture and combine thouroughly. (I keep a chop stick in the container to stir before using)

Use 1/4 cup for front loading machines and 1/3 cup for top loading machines, per load.

Homemade Fabric Softener
I actually found that I like this recipe of homemade fabric softener better than any store bought fabric softener I have tried.

22.5 ounce bottle hair conditioner ($1 store works fine)
3 cups white distilled vinegar
8 cups water

Combine all ingredients in a gallon size container with a lid. Use 1/4 to 1/3 cup per load. This can also be used in the fabric softener "Downey" balls, or poured into a spray bottle with water and sprayed on a wash cloth to be placed in dryer before drying clothes instead of using fabric softener sheets.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
I have not yet found a recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent that I like!

Recipe #1

This recipe leaves a milky film on everything. I tried adding bleach, vinegar, a couple drops of dishwashing liquid, and store bought anti-spot rinse aid, to different loads. Nothing seems to work perfectly.

Borax
Washing Soda (NOT baking soda)

Mix equal parts Borax and Washing Soda. Use 2 TBLS per load of dishes washed. Add 2-3 drops of liquid dish soap per load and use white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle instead of any commercial spot free rinse agent for a cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative.

Homemade Spray Weed Killer
I do not yet have results to publish about this product.

1 Gallon White Vinegar
2 Cups salt

Pour 2 cups of the vinegar out of the bottle (save for dishwasher or fabric softener). Replace with 2 cups salt. Wait until salt is dissolved and evenly distributed in vinegar before using. Pour into spray bottle and spray on all unwanted weeds. This is said to kill anything green, so do not use on weeds in lawn or around flowers. This works perfect for driveway cracks, rockeries, or pathways.
